Not for sissies
All hair removal methods have tricked women with their promises of easy, painless removal – The Epilady, scissors, razors, Nair and now…the wax.
My night began as any other normal weeknight. Come home, fix dinner, play with the kids.
I then had the thought that would ring painfully in my mind for the next few hours: “Maybe I should pull the waxing kit out of the medicine cabinet.”
So I headed to the site of my demise: the bathroom.
It was one of those “cold wax” kits. No melting a clump of hot wax, you just rub the strips together in your hand, they get warm and you peel them apart and press them to your leg (or wherever else) and you pull the hair right off. No muss, no fuss. How hard can it be? I mean, I’m not a genius, but I am mechanically inclined enough to figure this out. (YA THINK?)
So, I pull one of the thin strips out. Its two strips facing each other stuck together.
Instead of rubbing them together, my genius kicks in so I get out the hair dryer and heat it to 1000 degrees. (“Cold wax,” yeah…right!)
I lay the strip across my thigh. Hold the skin around it tight and pull.
It works! OK, so it wasn’t the best feeling, but it wasn’t too bad. I can do this! Hair removal no longer eludes me! I am She-rah, fighter of all wayward body hair and maker of smooth skin extraordinaire.
With my next wax strip I move north. After checking on the kids, I sneak back into the bathroom, for the ultimate hair fighting championship.
I drop my panties and place one foot on the toilet. Using the same procedure, I apply the wax strip across the right side of my bikini line, covering the right half of my particulars and stretching down to the inside of my butt cheek. (Yes, it was a long strip.)
I inhale deeply and brace myself….RRRRIIIPPP!!!!
I’m blind!!! Blinded from pain!!!!….OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!
:::Vision returning:::
I notice that I’ve only managed to pull off half the strip.
CRAP!!! Another deep breath and RRIIPP!!
Everything is swirly and spotted.
I think I may pass out…must stay conscious…Do I hear crashing drums???
:::Breathe, breathe:::
OK, back to normal.
I want to see my trophy – a wax covered strip, the one that has caused me so much pain, with my hairy pelt sticking to it. I want to revel in the glory that is my triumph over body hair. I hold up the strip!
There’s no hair on it.
Where is the hair???
WHERE IS THE WAX???
WHERE IS THE FREAKING WAX!!!???
Slowly I ease my head down, foot still perched on the toilet.
I see the hair. The hair that should be on the strip.
I touch. I am touching wax.
CRAP!!!
I run my fingers over the most sensitive part of my body, which is now covered in cold wax and matted hair. Then I make the next BIG mistake…remember my foot is still propped up on the toilet? I know I need to do something. So, I put my foot down. DAMN!!!!!!!! I hear the slamming of a cell door.
Particulars? Sealed shut!
Butt?? Sealed shut!
I penguin walk around the bathroom trying to figure out what to do and think to myself “Please don’t let me get the urge to poop. My head may pop off!”
What can I do to melt the wax? Hot water!! Hot water melts wax!! I’ll run the hottest water I can stand into the bathtub, get in, immerse the wax-covered bits and the wax should melt and I can gently wipe it off, right???
*WRONG!!!!!!!*
I get in the tub – the water is slightly hotter than that used to sterilize surgical equipment – I sit.
Now, the only thing worse than having your nether regions glued together, is having them glued together and then glued to the bottom of the tub…in scalding hot water. Which, by the way, doesn’t melt cold wax.
So, now I’m stuck to the bottom of the tub as though I had cement-epoxied myself to the porcelain!! God bless the man who had convinced me a few months ago to have a phone put in the bathroom!!!!!
I call my friend, thinking surely she has waxed before and has some secret of how to get me undone. It’s a very good conversation starter.
“So, my butt and who-ha are glued together to the bottom of the tub!”
There is a slight pause. She doesn’t know any secret tricks for removal but she does try to hide her laughter from me. She wants to know exactly where the wax is located, “Are we talking cheeks or… or who-ha?”
She’s laughing out loud by now……I can hear her. I give her the rundown and she suggests I call the number on the side of the box. YEAH!!!!!
Right!!
I should be the joke of someone else’s night. While we go through various solutions. I resort to scraping the wax off with a razor.
Nothing feels better then to have your girlie goodies covered in hot wax, glued shut, stuck to the tub in super hot water and then dry-shaving the sticky wax off!!
By now the brain is not working, dignity has taken a major hike and I’m pretty sure I’m going to need Post-Traumatic Stress counseling for this event.
My friend is still talking with me when I finally see my saving grace….the lotion they give you to remove the excess wax.
What do I really have to lose at this point? I rub some on and OH MY GOD!!!!!!!
The scream probably woke the kids and scared the ****ens out of my friend.
It’s sooo painful, but I really don’t care. ” It works!! IT WORKS!! ”
I get a hearty congratulation from my friend and she hangs up.
I successfully remove the remainder of the wax and then notice to my grief and despair….THE HAIR IS STILL THERE…….ALL OF IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So I recklessly shave it off. Heck, I’m numb by now. Nothing hurts. I could have amputated my own leg at this point.
Next week I’m going to try hair color……

After several painful waxing experiences mingled in with some decent ones I went to Healing Wizdom while in Reno test my luck with waxing once again. Even the best waxes I had gotten before were incredibly painful (even with the 2 stiff drinks I sometimes prepped myself with) so my anxiety was on high alert, but from the moment I walked into Tamara’s shop the energy of the place not only calmed but relaxed me. I was handed a delicious tea, served in a cup that looked as if it was straight out of the Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe (incidentally my favorite childhood novel) while being whisked into the inner sanctum of the spa. This waxing room was nothing like the sterile, cold examination rooms I had been waxed in before. Instead it was full of rainbows, calming color schemes and lovely wind chimes which really took my mind off the procedure.
The atmosphere had already gotten an A in my book but the waxing, oh the waxing. It was a truly tranquil experience – a word I think has never before been used with the term “brazilian wax”. Tamara was gracious in explaining every step from the healing properties of the post waxing ointment she used to the unique style of waxing she practiced which went with the hair and produced almost no pain in comparison to waxes I’d gotten in the past.
All and all it was a great experience, I left refreshed both physically and mentally (Tamara is a very active mind, big vision and strong spirit) and I will now recommend everyone I know to go get waxed at Healing Wizdom.

Horrible is the only way I can describe my first brazillian wax…
My friend’s aunt owned a little salon so one day, we decided to go get her nails done and I braved the brazillian. Laying down in a completely white room and crammed in a corner, I was a nervous wreck. My waxer did the bare minimum of preparation and went straight to work without any consolation. The pain was so bad that it left me bruised for a couple of weeks. No clean-up afterwards either. Needless to say, I never went back.

Salon Sheer Bliss Made FUN OF ME! 🙁
This is very embarassing but I went to this salon to get my first ever brazillian wax. At the most vulnerable point of the wax when I was on all fours, she said “you have a very furry butt crack”. It is one of those things where you tell yourself that they have seen a million private areas and not to be embarrassed, but that the fact that my butt crack was remarkably hairy was humiliating! It makes a very funny story now but boy was that embarassing at the time.

My First time left me in tears :'(
In 1987 (when waxing was rather new…especially in TX) I found a salon & after that horrible experience I didnt get waxed for TEN years! My appointment left me bruised, bleeding, sticky & in tears!
I’m glad I gave it another chance (granted it took moving to another city and an entire DECADE) but times changed and the feeling & results can be priceless when done correctly. Im new to Reno & hoping to find someone just as good (if not better) than my lady in Los Angeles at Smile.

Cheap Materials means Horrible pain!
It was horrible! She was a really nice lady, but while she was trying to hold a conversations about life with me, I was undergoing one of the worst pains in my life! I think the type of wax she used was one of the cheaper ones, making the whole procedure a pain. I had done it with her onces before and it wasn’t as bad, but for some reason, this time was just the worst! After the procedure, my area was swollen for days!

Swollen for DAYS!
This was my 2nd brazillian at a different place than 1st. The 1st was painful but manageable and I recovered quickly. This one hurt…alot! I’m also pretty sure she double dipped the stick. She blamed the length of the hair, which was shorter than at my 1st wax! I was uncomfortable as there was a window with shear curtains at the end of the table as well as a door that someone opened several times to talk to her! I was red and swollen for four days. Haven’t had a wax since almost a year ago.

My very first waxing experience was when I was getting ready to go on vacation. Since it was the very first time I had it done it was THE most painful for me. Either my skin was in shock or maybe the lady wasn’t that professional but it felt like torture. I was very happy with the result but it took me long time to have it done to myself again.

Decided to try and save a little cash and bought a do-it-yourself wax kit. Not only did I give up half way through and was covered in wax, I had some serious bruising that lasted for 3 weeks. From now on I’ll leave the waxing to the professionals!!

2 girls, 1 self waxing kit equals one hairy & sticky situation
Before a trip to see my long distance military beau, I bought a kit, took it home, rushed to the bathroom, tossed my clothes off, put it in the microwave & sat on my sink. Upon applying the 1st strip I reached for it & yanked w/ all my might. It wouldn’t give. I paced, after an hour & a half, waddling around, I called a friend. Even w/ both of us, it still wouldn’t rip off. Finally, I drove into town & bought a bottle of azulene and DABBED IT. So I left for my trip hairy AND sticky AND CHAFED!!

Wax BURN? Its possible!
Although this was not my first Brazilian, it had been several months since my last wax so I expected some pain. I did not, however, expect to be burned by the wax! Though all the hair was eventually removed, the first portion of wax that touched my skin actually burned me and I was left with a scab for weeks! Thankfully I am all better now, but I have learned my lesson and will always double check the wax temperature in the future!

The first thing out of Shelly’s mouth when I derobed in the private waxing room was ” you looked less hairy when you walked in” I responded with a look of “why else would I be here?” and braced myself for my full body wax. Shelly thought it would be bright to start from the bottom of my 5’10” body creating enough heat in my midsection to light Christmas. Once she reached my Brazilian area the wax would not stay on my skin and once torn, came off in small balls missing hair in patches. Ouch!

Five Start Hotel, ZERO star service!
I was departing from Athens on a cruise and wanted to be freshly waxed for sunning in the Aegean Sea. We were staying at a nice Marriott, which I thought would be reputable and safe. WRONG assumption!!! The waxer barely spoke English and obviously had no idea what she was doing. The wax was so hot that it burned me in my “most sensitive” part. It was so painful that I was crying and made her stop halfway though. Additionally, it was such a sticky mess that it took a week to clean off.

I was travelling through Thailand with my best friend, and we decided to get bikini waxed at a Thai spa. They waxed us side-by-side all romantic styled! And used COLD WAX! nearly ripping off all the hair by just applying wax! OUch! The whole time they laughed & joked in Thai, you could tell they didn’t do this often! To make it worse the “heart shape” I asked for ended up looking more like a weird mis-shaped hairy rectangle w/ wings! It was a disaster, but makes for a good story!

OMG I will never wax myself again!My first attempt was utter failure! I thought I had the wax at the correct temperature carefully stirring it trying to get that perfect consistancy unsuer how much to use I dig a large amount out and gently put the first layer on my very clean and very dry skin! Needless to say when I tried to pull that sucker off after breathing 1-2-3 and ouch! I forgot about the hair and just wanted that wax off my skin, once removed I was left w an open wound on my crotch!

“Get on all fours!” Excuse me?
It was my first time getting a brazilian, or any type of waxing for that matter, and this woman knew and still did not try and do anything to make me feel more comfortable. The only words she said to me were “strip” and “turn over and get on all fours”…saying i felt intimidated would be an understatement. I felt like asking “shouldn’t you at least buy me dinner first?” I was so grateful that it was over and never even looked inside the salon again as I walked by.

Pealed, burnt, and hairy! Not a good wax!
I came to the salon for a bikini wax. The woman that did it for me was nice enough, but clearly did not know what she was doing. First, she burned me with the wax. She didn’t get the whole area I asked for and it was very uneven. I didn’t even ask her to fix it because I just wanted to get out of there! The next day, I had a rash and peeling skin from the burn and poor wax job. On top of that, there were areas she completely missed patches of hair. It was terrible!!!

I had been getting a bikini wax forever. And the estechian encouraged me to get a brazillian wax. Although there was some discomfort, and pain. I loved the results and have been trying to get Brazillian wax whenever the finances allocated for one. I even tried to do one myself. Let me tell you that was SOOOO painful.

The very first time that I went to get a wax, was the worst experience EVER! Not only was the girl extremely rude, but she was not gentle at all. I would say that normally my pain tolerance is pretty high but after that experience I still have not gone back for one, and it has been an entire year!

I have always wanted to get a Brazilian wax but never had the courage to do so. One day my friend and I thought it would be okay to buy an at home kit and do it ourselves. I let her wax me first and needless to say, I ended up having patches of hair missing and it was now replaced with blood. It was a very painful experience even through all the laughing. When it came time for me to wax her, she refused and I was the only one left with a sore, bloody, and patchy vagina.

It was very painful, she missed spots, and would yell something in chinese when she pulled the strip off. She didnt relax me shee would count down to three so I know when it its coming, and she also didnt get rid of all the wax so the wax got stuck to my underwear, I was walking like a cowboy and as soon as I got him i found my self stuck to my underwear, I panicked and called my friend after being laughed at through the phone I sat down in hot water so I can take off my underwears.

Although Tammy is very sweet and talkative for distraction, the procedure was very painful, with alot of skin lifting – bleeding in some areas, and about a week to recover….excoriated, delicate skin places, and tremendous itching to heal. Quick and painful, no relaxation here. Literally – rip, rip, rip, done.

It was horrible, I was not sure what is going to come. But I am sure of one thing now, never again to that lady..
It was in a closet of a nail salon with only a curtain covering the doorway and a lady who didn’t speak English. She positioned me spread eagle facing the doorway and ripped away. Then she motioned for me to turn over and I eventually figured out she wanted me on all fours so she could put super burning hot wax between my cheeks. She slipped out of the room leaving me with wax drying there for several minutes before returning to rip the hair and skin from my tender backside.

I let Gia give me a bikini wax knowing full well she was a student for esthetics. She laid her first strip of soft wax down, placed her strip over it and pulled UP. Needless to say, I bruised immediately. I laughed it off and the rest of the waxing went fine, but omg, it hurt for DAYS afterward!

This couldn’t be worse. I am not going back there again.
I got the worse wax ever where I was burned with the wax, I had to help her with my wax and then I broke out really bad, I called the next day and they told me there was nothing they could do for me. It made me not ever want to get a way ever again.

Very unprofessional, very unpleasent. I should have left when I had the chance. I wish waxing could be as easy as shaving those creepy hair off.
I walk into a salon and the door is locked behind me, because there is no waxing room. Next the lady lays down papertowels on an office chaire behind the desk and tells me to take my pants off. At this point I really want to leave, but don’t want to be rude. Lets just say I should have left. I then endured and hour and a half of the worst wax of my life. When I left I was ready to cry and I wasn’t even smooth. Its all kinda funny now but not at the time.

Waxing at home?? I don’t think so. I would rather go for a professional service.
Last summer I decided to pick up a self waxing kit from Ulta (the kind with the hot roll on wax) and went home immediately to test it out. I started with a strip on my ankle to test for pain and it was fine! The wax went on smoothly and it barely hurt so I moved on to the bikini area…unfortunately, the first roll was the only one that worked! Every one after that was clumpy and painful painful painful! And did it remove the hair?…of course it didn’t. I can’t wait to try the professional way!

Why it has to be unsanitary? Waxing requires professionalism, experience and hygeine. Something that you will only find at Healing Wizdom Spa.
The experience was pretty painful. the waxer went over the same area over and over until my skin was practically raw. What usually takes a day to feel better took over 3 days! Also, the waxer reused the same stick in the wax. It seemed very unsanitary to me.

My sister convinced me when I was younger to get a Brazilian, the woman she took me too was horrifying. She thrust a teddy bear into my arms and kept slapping my legs and shouting “keep ’em open” ( I was closing them due to the pain)! Yikes! I’ve never been to get one since. Now I’m getting married this Tuesday and my girlfriends have convinced me to get one… Your reviews are amazing, I would love to book an appt with you!

Beware of those unprofessional salons. I have had an experience of one and it SUCKS!!
We all know it’s not the best position to be in; laying there with everything removed from the waist down and only a small towel to hold on to for some remote sense of privacy. We make little eye contact initially and try to pretend that it’s going to be ok. Then all of a sudden I look over at the wax pot and realize that she is double dipping. The same pot used for EVERYONE and double dipping to boot. YUCK. Great!! Not!! Half waxed and no where to turn. Never again.

Doing it yourself would never be a good decision. With my experience, I would recommend go for a professional service.
Tired of ingrown hairs and itchy regrowth from shaving my bikini line, I decided to try one of those do-it-yourself cold wax kits. I shouldn’t have applied multiple strips before removing the first, because that one was so painful that I hesitated with the others. Consequently, most of them did not remove the hair, AND they bruised me pretty badly. As it turns out, sporting a swimsuit while my crotch is highlighted by purple polka-dotted bruises is worse than having razor stubble.

She is unprofessional, she is careless, she is inexperienced. Wish I never would have went to her salon.
I went to a salon in Sparks that my boyfriend bought for me on Groupon. She was not on time. I had scheduled for brazilian, eyebrows & lip. She forgot about the eyebrows & lip, but I could not wait to get out of there. I had to ask her to wash her hands. She did not put down a new sheet or paper until I asked her and as I am a RN that just blew it for me. Never went back. Should not have stayed in the first place.

It was my first wax and I was nervous. She was very nice but I wasn’t entirely sure that she was very confident. I somehow got the vibe she was nervous too. Needless to say it was painful, both literally and figuratively.

First time Brazilian Wax.. Wish me luck!!
My first wax was the most painful experience. It was done by a gal in Oregon. She used soft wax with strips. When she was done, I looked down and saw patches of hair leftover with a little bleeding. I had nothing to compare the waxing experience to and I thought to myself that I would never get a wax done again!!! Luckily I tried it again at another salon, who used hard wax and I’ve been doing that ever since. Today will be my first appointment at Healing Wizdom.

At Home!!! Never again.
My boyfriend said he could do it as good as a salon..so trying to save money, i went for it. We bought a product at walmart and set up a spot at home. IT DIDNT WORK!! It hurt sooo bad..he didnt pull fast enough and the stuff was cheap. Then…he spilt the wax on my rear end also. Im hoping for a better experience and out come..needless to say..i was spotted for a week or so..i didnt let him finish!! Lol

Moving to a new state has its challenges, one of the toughest has been finding service providers – especially for something as personal as a Brazilian wax!! The technician didn’t leave the room while I disrobed (she said she’d see it all anyway). Awkward, give me the illusion of privacy please! I wasn’t covered during the entire procedure. Just laying there exposed while trying to make chit chat. She didn’t clean up the wax remnants and I was sticky and so uncomfortable for hours afterward. 🙁
